To put a complex process into simple terms, the battery delivers an electrical current into a tiny quartz crystal, causing it to vibrate into forks inside the watch. Those forks vibrate a staggering 32,768 times per second! A circuit counts the vibrations and generates electrical pulses, one per second, that move the hands of your watch.
